Jaime Munguia will challenge Armando Rezendiz for the WBA super middleweight title on May 2 in Las Vegas.
Resendiz is set to make his first defense on the undercard of Benavidez vs. Gilberto Ramirez, with Munguia confirmed as the main event opponent after negotiations were completed. Talks over the Mexico fixture broke down earlier this year over financial terms, but the deal is now complete.
Using Munguia as an opponent for Resendiz brings a recognizable name that fans can take notice of. It is popular in Mexico and has many fans in the Southern California area. He has an impressive 45-2 record, but literally all of those wins have come against fringe opponents. You can tell that his various promoters matched him very well to create that kind of album.
Jermall Charles has been discussed as an alternative during that period, and reports earlier this week pointed in that direction. Those talks didn’t result in a fight, and Munguia eventually secured the win when the terms were settled.
“Nothing. It was never made. It was just a possibility despite some reports,” Dan Raphael said on X when asked what happened to Jermall challenging Resendiz on the May 2 card.
It would be risky to use Jermall as an opponent for Resendiz, as he will turn 36 in May, has a history of injury problems and has fought just twice in the last five years since 2021. They would need a standby fighter if Charlo is used in case he pulls out at the last minute.
Munguia is also not an ideal option, but for a different reason. With a 2-2 record in his last four fights, he was rewarded for the setback. Diego Pacheco or Lester Martinez are probably better suited to challenge Resendiz for the world title based on what they’ve done lately.
The match returns the card to its original direction, with the Mexican title fight now in place after a brief delay in negotiations. Resendiz moves forward with his first defense on the big stage. The opponent is now ready.
