Israel’s attorney-general orders probe into Sara Netanyahu

Israel’s attorney-general has ordered an investigation into Sara Netanyahu, the prime minister’s wife, on suspicion of witness tampering and obstruction of justice in her husband’s corruption case.

Thursday’s decision by Gali Bahrav-Miara and state prosecutor Amit Eisman cited an Israeli television investigation alleging that Sara Netanyahu orchestrated a campaign of protests and social media attacks against alleged “enemies” of the prime minister.

Reports allege that the former attorney-general who indicted Benjamin Netanyahu was targeted; Chief Prosecutor of the trial; and Hadas Klein, a witness in a case.

Following the publication of the report, Klein and several others filed a police complaint against Sarah Netanyahu.

Ministers and political allies of Netanyahu’s government also reacted angrily to the decision to call for an investigation.

Yariv Levin, the justice minister, criticized the attorney-general in a telegram for “extremely selective enforcement”, which he called a “crime”. He dismissed the allegations as “television gossip”.

Israeli Parliament Speaker Amir Ohana said on Facebook that Bahrav-Miara’s motivations were political, claiming that she “suffered from blindness, deafness and muteness”. [investigations against] Its political side.”

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gavir called for Baharov-Miara to be fired. “Anyone who politically oppresses government ministers and their families cannot continue to serve as attorney-general,” he wrote in X.

Baharov-Miara has criticized the Netanyahu government’s efforts over the past two years to reform the country’s judiciary, a move critics view as a power grab that could undermine the country’s democracy.

It is not yet clear if and how the police will act on orders to open an investigation against Sarah Netanyahu.

In a further complication, Police Commissioner Danny Levy was also involved in the televised investigation.
