Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has been sentenced to 14 years in prison on corruption charges, the latest in a series of charges against him.
This is the longest sanctioned prison sentence for a cricketer-turned-politician, ever built from August 2023you have received it.
He has been indicted on more than 100 charges, ranging from leaking state secrets to selling government gifts – all of which he has said are politically motivated.
The latest case has been described by Pakistani government officials as the biggest in the country, although the country has faced serious financial problems in the past, some of which were former leaders.
Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi are accused of receiving land as a bribe from the prime minister for construction through the Al-Qadir Trust, which the family established while in office.
In exchange, investigators said, Khan used £190m ($232m) recovered by the UK’s National Crime Agency to pay the tycoon’s court fees.
Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has argued that the property was given to an organization to support spiritual education and was not used for Khan’s personal gain.
In a letter on X, PTI chairman Gohar Ali Khan said the former Prime Minister “did no wrong” and said “this is an unfair case made by politicians”.
“But [Imran Khan] He will not give up, he will not lose heart, he will not break,” he wrote.
Friday’s decision comes after several delays as Khan’s party held talks with the government.
After his sentencing on Friday, Khan told reporters in court that he “doesn’t do anything or ask for help.”
Khan faces a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison. He has also been fined more than £4,000.
His wife has been sentenced to seven years and fined more than £2,000. Mr Bibi, who has been on bail since last October, was detained in court after his verdict.
In 2023, Khan was sentenced to three years in prison for not declaring the income he earned from selling gifts he received while on the job.
Last year, Khan was sentenced to 14 years in prison for selling government gifts, and another 10 years by releasing government secrets. Both sentences were suspended months later.
Despite being in prison and barred from public service, Khan is still around it is evident in the politics of Pakistan. Last year’s election saw candidates supported by Imran Khan win more seats of all parties.
Khan’s prosecution sparked massive protests by his supporters – which has been happening ever since he met the criminals of the authorities. Thousands of protesters have been arrested and many have been injured in clashes with the police.
