Washington, Trump’s second word for business and the world is your guide for him
The fear of Russia combined the Western alliance. Now Russia’s fear has threatened to break it.
The Northern Atlantic Agreement Organization formed to prevent Moscow in the United States, Canada and European allies in 1949. But if the Trump administration now tries to force Ukraine to take a partial defeat in the war with Russia, the United States will be widely seen as a result of Russian aggression in Europe. If the NATO allies are facing the threat that they face – and if they do not agree on how to deal with it – their entire alliance is at risk.
The Atlantic Alliance has survived many deep disagreements for decades – from Suez to Vietnam and Iraq in 76 – because there was always a compromise that the United States and its European allies were in the same direction.
The share of the US-European partnership was based on interests and values. Throughout the Cold War, the interest shared was the addition of the Soviet threat. The price that was shared was the defense of democracy. Even after the end of that war, the protection of terrorism and new democracy in Europe has given a common purpose to a NATO.
However, that ordinary understanding is now disappointed. A catastrophic conclusion of Ukraine war can completely snap it.
For the past one week, the United States and Europe have been moving towards various peace plans for Ukraine. Europeans reject Trump’s main components – above all, legal recognition of Russia’s Crimea attachment.
Donald Trump felt that in the weekend, Rome had a friendly conversation with Voldimir Zelnsky in Rome – and also criticized US leader Vladimir Putin. However, European and Ukrainians have not withdrawn any component of its peace plan.
Disagreements are deeply different views of international security – and where the threat of the next war is coming from. Europeans believe that rewarding Russian aggression in Ukraine will create more potential that Putin will start with the Baltic states and attack the rest of Europe.
The Trump administration looks very differently. It is concerned that the United States can eventually draw a direct dispute with Russia. Trump himself repeatedly warned of the risk of World War III. The Biden administration was also concerned about the risk of growth with Russia. Unlike Trump, however, it was a deep doubt of Putin in Europe and the determination of determination that Russia’s aggression should not be rewarded.
Deviation of security philosophy is far from the question of how the Ukraine war can end. American allies need to face the reality that Trump is directly threatening the region of two NATO members.
Trump has repeatedly promised to include Greenland – which is an autonomous organ in Denmark – the United States. In a recent interview with Time Magazine he too Repetition His desire to turn Canada into the 8th state of America. Trump did not threaten Overtin’s military against Canada. However, he clearly wants to extinguish its existence as an independent country.
Combine this authoritarian instinct, his threat to NATO allies and his clear sympathy to Putin – and it is hard to argue that NATO is still a coalition around the values shared.
In fact, the conflict of values is now open. Both the United States and its largest European allies have been arguing that they are protecting democracy. However, both believe (or claim to believe) that democracy is under threat on the other side of the Atlantic.
In a famous speech at the Munich Protection Conference, JD Vans accuses the American European allies suppress free speech and fear of their own people. The Vice-President’s allegations were mostly combined with cool wrath in Europe-where Trump’s attempt to overthrow the US presidential election of 2021 and his attacks on the US judiciary, media and universities could not be focused.
The Trump administration and its European allies now propagate two anti -Western philosophy. Vans-Trump Vision is anthropological-nationalist, culturally conservative and generous. European is based on an internationalist and law and liberal institution.
The category is more bitter because both sides believe that it is an existence struggle to survive – and the Allies on the other side of the Atlantic. The Trump administration wants to work with nationalist people like Hungary’s Victor Arban, Slovakia’s Robert Fico or Britain’s Nigel Farage. The major European governments were hoping to win Kamala Harris to win the US President and now counting the days until the US elections.
The Translatantic Alliance was used as a bilateral promise that could easily avoid government changes. It can only work now if liberals – or Ilibrals – at the same time are in power on both sides of the Atlantic.
Then there is the basis of doubt. As well as the value and interest shared depends on the confidence of the Western coalition. All parties need to know that it will tolerate, whatever happens in the next election. However, Europeans and Canadians now know that Trump is able to choose twice in the United States. They can no longer take American steady dignity.
