Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sounded off about Elon Musk’s influence on the spending drama on Capitol Hill on Thursday.
“If you’re just catching up: The Republican Party, taking orders from the richest man in the world, is on track to shut down the government over the holidays, freeze pay for our troops and cut off food benefits for low-income families just in time for Christmas,” the president wrote. candidate in 2016 on X.
Clinton, a former first lady and senator, served in Congress from 2001 to 2009.
Her comments came precisely as the president of the House Mike Johnson released a new version of the continuing resolution, or CR, to keep the government open past Friday night’s deadline.

Musk strongly opposed the original spending deal Johnson negotiated with Democrats, threatening to back a primary challenge to any Republican who votes for him.
Without an acceptable deal to move the government funding deadline to March and continue spending at 2024 levels, the government will partially shut down at midnight on Saturday.

But House Democrats oppose it the latest iteration of the spending plan. And with 36 trillion dollars of debt and a $1.8 trillion deficit in 2024, some conservatives oppose the CR, which moves the funding deadline to March and keeps spending entirely at 2024 levels.
“The Musk-Johnson proposal is not serious, it’s ridiculous. Extreme MAGA Republicans are forcing us to shut down the government,” said House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
Rep. Richard Neal, D-Mass., has indicated that Democratic leadership will push its members to vote “no” on the deal.
Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., complained that the latest deal was marred by opposition from conservatives, with input from DOGE leaders Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy.
“Everybody agreed,” he said, “and then Elon Musk blew it, who apparently became the fourth branch of government. And that’s just an unacceptable way to do things.”
“Democrats will try to figure out how we can save the public good as a wreck that was just pushed.”
After the text of the bill was released, shouts of “hell no” could be heard in the room where the Democrats were meeting.

HERE’S WHAT HAPPENS DURING A PARTIAL GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN
The latest continuing resolution, or CR, would extend current government funding levels for three months and also suspend the debt limit for two years, as requested by President-elect Trump.
It comes after the original 1,500-page CR drew opposition from the right, due to political and financial factors.
Deputies of the House of Representatives could vote on the new law as early as Thursday evening.
It was not immediately clear whether the new deal would pass — Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, who also led opposition to the original bill, also denounced the new deal.
“More debt. More government. Credit card increase to $4 trillion with ZERO spending limits and cuts. HARD NO,” Roy wrote on X.
