Eddie Hearn says it is eating at Keyshawn Davis, having lost four times to Cuban Andy Cruz in the amateurs, and believes he will want to prove he is the better fighter in the pros.
Davis repeatedly refused to fight Cruz, saying he was beneath him and had nothing to gain from fighting him. It just sounds like old fashioned, open fear on Keyshawn’s part because he doesn’t want to get beaten up and have his career ruined before it even starts.
Hearn believes a fight between highly ranked lightweight contender Keyshawn (12-0, 8 KOs) and Cruz (4-0, 2 KOs) would have great growth due to their rivalry.
He says that if Davis wins the WBO lightweight title from champion Denis Berinchik next month on February 14, he may want to make things right with Cruz.
Andy takes on Omar Salcido (20-1, 14 KOs) tonight in a 10-round co-headlining match on the Diego Pacheco vs. Stephen Nelson card at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. If Cruz looks vulnerable in this fight, it could give Keyshawn the courage to finally fight him.
Kishon said this week that his focus is on winning the WBO belt from Berinchik and then looking to unify against IBF champion Vasily Lomachenko. He is counting on Top Rank to be able to fight for him.
That’s not happening, but that’s Keyshawn’s desperate hope. He’s not going to fight his friend, Shakur Stevenson, and Gervonts Davis isn’t going to waste time fighting him. That leaves Cruz.
“If I was Top Rank, I wouldn’t watch Andy Cruz because you’re going to use the excuse, ‘Ah, nobody knows who he is yet.’ He only had five fights.’ Let’s be honest; the buildup, the rivalry, the history is a big fight,” Eddie Hearn said Fighthippe when asked if he would like a fight between lightweight contenders Andy Cruz and Keyshawn Davis in 2025.
“I know Keyshawn, he’s a competitor, and along the way, he’s improved. He was always a great fighter. He’s very good, Keyshawn, and maybe he can beat Andy Cruz. He (Davis) lost to him four times in the amateurs. He never came close to beating him, and everyone will say, ‘Yeah, but amateurs are amateurs.’
“Yes, he is, but he (Keishavn) still hasn’t beaten him, and it’s going to eat at him.” I know Keyshavn is a winner, and it will eat him up. He’ll want to get it right in the pros. So he (Davis) will beat (WBO lightweight champion Dennis) Berinchik (February 14) in style, but who knows? Andy must win (against Omar Salcido). It’s not an easy fight,’ Hearn said.
