Haney-Garcia lawsuit on hold as rematch talks progress

ESPN reports that Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney have agreed to suspend the lawsuit for 90 days. They reached a settlement to drop it.

The two fighters are reaching an agreement to fight later this year, and dropping the legal dispute will smooth the way for the fight.

Lawsuit pending

The settlement allows the lawsuit to be resolved, but it needs to be ended. Once completed, the lawsuit will be dismissed. Ryan said that was a condition of negotiating a rematch with Haynie.

Turki Al-Sheikh wants this rematch. Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) filed the lawsuit after testing positive for the banned substance, Ostarine, following his April 20 win over Devin.

Garcia takes the interim fight

Ryan revealed today that he has a mystery opponent for his next fight, and he “can’t wait” for fans to find out who it is. That’s not Hanei. There isn’t much interest in their second fight after Ryan obliterated him last April.

He wouldn’t fight him again unless he dropped the lawsuit. It makes sense for Hani because he would probably get more money fighting Ryan again than he would from a lawsuit. Without the rematch, Hannay would be stuck fighting other fighters for less money and a lot of risk.

Hanney is not a big shot and his career prospects are not promising at 140 or 147. He did well initially when he moved up to light heavyweight, old Regis Prograis again, but he would have a harder time fighting other fighters who are still in their prime for years and they can strike.

That’s why he has to get a rematch with Ryan. Even if his career falls apart right after, he’ll have that big paycheck to live on for the rest of his life.

Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia jointly asked a court on Wednesday to put the lawsuit against Garcia on hold for 90 days due to an interim settlement, according to a legal document obtained by ESPN.

The development comes as Haney and Garcia close in on a deal to…
