Elon Musk officially steps down from role at DOGE

He is officially hired as a “special government employee”, which is a Congress of the role created in 1962, which enables an executive or legislative branch to hire temporary employees for certain short -term initiatives.

Special government employees are allowed to work for the federal government for “no more than 130 days in a period of 365 days”, according to the Government Ethics Office. Musk’s 130-day time frame, starting at the day of the inauguration, was supposed to be dry on May 30th.

Doge is a temporary intermediate organization founded to reduce and simplify the federal government. The group itself will be dissolved on July 4, 2026, according to Trump’s executive order.

Musk and Trump have previously examined that the men’s role is temporary and will end up in the spring.

“You are, technically, a special government employee and you should be 130 days,” Bret Baier asked in Fox News during an exclusive interview with Musk and Dog team members in April. “Will you continue to go through it or do you think you will do it?”

“I think we will achieve most of the work needed to reduce deficit for a trillion dollar in that time frame,” Musk replied.

Trump hinted at Musk’s departure to the media on March 31, when asked if Musk wanted to remain in the Government’s role longer than a predetermined 130 days.

“I think it’s amazing. But I also think he has a big company to run,” Trump said in March. “And so he’ll come back at some point.”

“I would keep it as much as I can keep it,” Trump said. “He’s a very talented guy. You know, I love very smart people. He’s very smart. And he did a good job,” the president added. “Doge is, we found numbers that no one can believe in.”
