The richest man in the world, Elon Musk, started his opinion when he changed his name on his website X to “Kekius Maximus”.
The tech giant – and a close ally of US President-elect Donald Trump – has yet to comment on the name or his new photo featuring Pepe the Frog – a meme that has been used by far-right groups.
The move has sent ripples through the cryptocurrency world, sending the price of memecoin — a digital currency inspired by internet memes — that shares the same name soaring.
In the past, Mr. Musk has also touched crypto prices with his social commentary, but it was not immediately clear if he was involved in this memecoin.
“Kekius” appears to be the Latin word for “kek”, a word similar to “laugh out loud” popular with gamers but often associated with the alt-right.
“Kek” is the name of an ancient Egyptian god of darkness, who is sometimes depicted with the head of a frog.
Many people associate “Maximus” with the name of Russell Crowe’s hero in the movie Gladiator, Maximus Decimus Meridius.
Mr Musk’s new photo shows Pepe dressed in Roman armor holding what appears to be a game.
