De Los Santos and Martin in talks for a March 29 bout at the MGM Grand

Frank Martin and Edwin De Los Santos are negotiating a March 29 fight on the undercard of Sebastian Fundora vs. Errol Spence at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The weight for the Martin vs. De Los Santos fight could be 135 or 140.

Fight In The Works

Fernando Sabatini reports that the Martin-De Los Santos fight is in talks. If it happens, it would be the first fight for De Los Santos (16-2, 14 KOs) since his 12-round unanimous decision loss on November 16, 2023 in Las Vegas. It was a fight for the vacant WBC lightweight title. Shakur made it really ugly with his movement and clinch.

The fans at T-Mobile Arena that night booed both fighters from the fourth round on continued to boo Shakur as he was interviewed in the ring after the fight. It was he who made it boring to Las Vegas fans, who have little patience for racers.

That match should have been scored as a draw or a win for Edwin as he landed all the significant punches in the contest. Shakur just ran and held on.

‘The Ghost’ Martin (18-1, 12 KOs) is coming off an eighth-round knockout loss to WBA Lightweight Champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis on June 15, 2024. At the time of the knockout, Martin was trailing 67 -66, 67- 66 and 67-66.

If the fight happens, De Los Santos would have to be the heavy favorite to knock out Martin because he has the advantage in hand speed and punching power. Martin looked bad in his July 15, 2023 fight against Artem Harutyunyan and had to rally to win that fight via a 12-round unanimous decision in the championship rounds.

14 months too long?

For Martin and De Los Santos, this is an important fight as they both need a win to stay in the world title hunt. De Los Santos had already been out of the ring for 14 months since his loss to Shakur. He should have come back a long time ago.

“I have confirmed that Edwin De Los Santos and Frank Martin are in negotiations for a possible fight on March 29th at the MGM in Las Vegas as part of the Fundora-Spence (card). It could be 135 or 140 lbs,” said Fernando Sabatini Ks.
