‘Dallas’ star Patrick Duffy would start mornings on-set with a bottle of champagne and tequila


“Dallas” star Patrick Duffy he has fond memories of drinking before and after filming the hit series.

During a recent podcast episode of Duffy’s “Step By Step” co-stars, Staci Keanan and Christine Lakin, “Keanan and Lakin give you deja vu,” actor gave a rare interview and admitted that the “Dallas” cast would drink a bottle of champagne before filming.

“When we started working, every morning when we were working together on the set, we’d get an interview time, usually, you know, an interview time at seven, six o’clock. I’d stop at MGM. We’d park the cars [Larry Hagman’s] room. We’d pop open a bottle of champagne,” Duffy said.

The 80s star said that the actors didn’t just drink before the show.

“That was my day job with Hagman for 13 years. It was the ’80s.”

“We could estimate when the show would end for today, how it was going, what the last few shots would be, what the set up would be. When we knew it was the right time, catch the props guy’s eye… and then magically a styrofoam cup would appear.

“We’d have a little tequila before we wrapped,” he said.

Duffy and Hagman starred together in “Dallas”. The series aired for 14 seasons from 1978 to 1991. The duo played brothers, Bobby (Duffy) and JR Ewing (Hagman). The cast also included Jim Davis, Barbara Bel Geddes and Linda Gray.

Duffy admitted on the podcast that Hagman is very similar to his on-air persona and was often the instigator when it came to drinking on set.

“When we read the script for ‘Dallas,’ we all met for the first time. No actor on the show had ever met any other actor on the show,” Duffy said.

“We walked into the room, ‘Hi, how are you? Hi, how are you?’ And then Haggy came in, a full cowboy, with fringe, leather clothes, a big hat, leather bags over his shoulders, and in the bags were bottles of champagne.

“I wouldn’t drink again after that first glass. Haggy would go on, and during the day he would drink three or four bottles of champagne,” he continued.

“We all sat down and drank champagne before we even started reading the ‘Dallas’ pilots to get to know each other,” Duffy said, explaining that it was “the beginning of a relationship.”

It was also the beginning of a lifelong friendship between Hagman and Duffy.

He said he “went home that day after the whole process and I said to my wife, ‘I think I met my best friend today.’ That was Hagman from that moment until the day he died.”

“That was my day job with Hagman for 13 years,” Duffy said. – Those were the 80s.

Hagman was the only “Dallas” star to appear in all 357 episodes of the original series. He went on to reprise his role as JR Ewing in spin-off series, “Knots Landing”.

Hagman died in November 2012 at the age of 81 after complications from acute myeloid leukemia.
