Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan has undergone surgery and is in critical condition after he was stabbed at his home, his team has said.
The attack took place on Thursday morning in a suburb of Mumbai, where Khan lives with his family.
The city police told BBC Marathi that the actor was injured after an altercation between him and an unknown person who entered his house in the middle of the night.
The police have formed teams to investigate the matter.
“Khan has come out of surgery and is in critical condition. He is currently recovering and doctors are monitoring his progress,” Khan’s team said.
Khan is married to Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor Khan and the couple has two children. The family has not made a public statement, but Khan’s team says he is safe.
Khan was taken to Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai on Thursday morning.
Niraj Uttamani, the hospital’s chief operating officer, told BBC Marathi that Khan had 6 stab wounds, of which two were deep.
The details of the attack are not yet known. Police have said that an “unknown person” broke into the actor’s house.
“After the incident, an argument broke out between Khan and the intruder,” Mumbai Police Deputy Commissioner Dixit Gedam told BBC Marathi.
Khan’s group said it was “an attempted robbery” but did not elaborate.
“We are asking the media and fans to be concerned, it is a matter for the police,” they said.
