US President Joe Biden has warned of the “dangers” of the oligarchy taking place in America, as he delivered a farewell speech ending his decades-long political career.
“Today, the oligarchy is growing in America a lot of wealth, power and influence that threatens all of our democracy, our freedom and our freedom,” he said on Wednesday.
Biden, 82, took aim at the super-rich “tech-industrial complex” which he said could have unlimited power over the American people.
He also used his final televised remarks from the White House to issue warnings about climate change and media misunderstandings.
Speaking from the Oval Office where his family gathered to watch, he outlined his administration’s record at one point, detailing job creation, spending on jobs, health care, getting the country out of the pandemic, and making the US a safer country.
He added, however, that “it will take time to feel all that we have done together, but the seeds are planted, and they will grow and bloom for many years”.
Mr Biden wished Donald Trump success, but issued several warnings, with the president saying “a lot is at stake right now”.
In the context of climate change, he said “the powerful want to use their unyielding power to undo what we have done to deal with the climate crisis in order to meet their interests for power and profit”.
On propaganda, Mr. Biden warned that “Americans are being buried because of a lot of lies and lies, which are contributing to the abuse of power”.
He also took a swipe at social networking companies like Meta, which recently announced remove independent research. “Social media is losing focus on reality. The truth is distorted by lies told for power and profit,” Biden said.
And his attack on the wealthy “tech-industrial complex” was hidden from Silicon Valley executives such as Elon Musk, the richest man in the world who is close to Trump and has contributed a lot of money to his work.
Other tech bosses such as Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg have tried to mend relations with Trump before he returns to the White House.
In closing his speech, Mr. Biden called on the American people to “protect” their country: “All of you be guardians of the flame.”
His farewell address came the same day announced a cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas, which he mentioned in his opening remarks.
Biden said the negotiations were the most difficult of his career, and he credited himself for helping close the deal.
The agreement will see a ceasefire on January 19, a day before Trump takes office. The incoming president also praised the agreement, saying it was possible because he won the election in November.
