Conservatives and allies President-elect Donald Trump is dismantling the narrative put forth by Democratic lawmakers like Sen. Elizabeth Warren that Republicans have blocked funding for childhood cancer research in a spending bill, pointing to a standalone bill that has languished in the Democratic-controlled Senate for months.
Congress passed a spending cut early Saturday morning as the government pushed for an extended shutdown. The bill’s passage came after tech billionaire Elon Musk and other Trump allies criticized the more than 1,500-page bill early last week as “outrageous” and “full of excessive spending, special interest payments and pork barrel politics,” demanding lawmakers return to the negotiating table. .
The Senate tabled a third version of the short-term funding bill on Saturday morning, following negotiations that trimmed the bill so that it did not include measures such as a pay raise for lawmakers.
As negotiations broke down, Warren and other Democrats tried criticize Republicans for allegedly blocking childhood cancer research funding in the bill.

“Now we’re actually getting our first taste — it’s live and in living color — of what it means to have this DOGE,” Warren said on CNN as the government prepared to shut down Friday night.

“Right here, and what’s that going to mean. And there’s Elon Musk’s fingerprints all over it. Because, like, what this bill says is everything, let’s get rid of funding of pediatric cancer research. Let’s get rid of cervical and breast cancer early detection research funding. Let’s get rid of research funding for children with Down syndrome and sickle cell anemia. Let’s get rid of those things so we can make room for tax cuts for billionaires, that’s Elon Musk’s notion of efficiency,” she continued.

Other conservatives and Trump allies strongly condemned the narrative that the GOP had blocked funding for childhood cancer research, pointing to a standalone bill that passed the Republican-led House of Representatives back in March and languished for months in the Democratic-led Senate.

The House of Representatives passed a standalone bill on March 5, 384 to 4, that allocates millions of dollars a year for pediatric research through 2028. The bill was delivered to the Senate on March 6, but Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has taken no action on it. law, prompting condemnation from conservatives a few months later that Democrats were using research funding as a “bargaining chip.”
TRUMP-BACKED SPENDING BILL PROPOSAL

If this funding is so important, it can only be passed on its own as a stand-alone piece of legislation You know, like the government should be doing, instead of cramming hundreds of useless proposals into the same bill like pediatric cancer research funding in a 1,500 page mess that nobody really reads, so you can attack anyone who doesn’t support useless things by claiming they hate children with cancer,” said an op-ed published in the Washington Examiner.
A review of the bill shows that on Friday night The Senate passed the law by voice vote, following condemnation directed at the GOP for allegedly blocking research funding.
The bill provides $12.6 million annually in cancer research funding through 2031.
