First of all, let’s update your software to iOS 18.2 or later:

Using categories in Mail on iPhone

In iOS 18.2 and later, Mail application improves email management by automatically sorting messages into different categories. This feature is designed to help you quickly find and manage your email.

Overview of categories

  • Primary: Contains personal messages and time-sensitive information.
  • Transactions: Track receipts, invoices and shipping notifications.
  • Updates: Includes news, newsletters and social media updates.
  • Promotions: Displays coupons and sales emails.

Note: If a message in the Transactions, Updates, or Promotions categories contains time-sensitive information, it will also appear in the Primary category.

Using the New Mail categorization feature

Now that you’re ready for iOS 18.2 or later, let’s explore how to use the new Mail Categorization feature:

  • Open it Mail application on your iPhone.
  • At the top you will see four new categories: Primary, Transactions, Updates and Promotions.
  • Touch any category to view emails sorted specifically for that section.
  • If you want to see all your emails together, swipe from right to left at the top to reveal “All Mail” option.
  • After you update to iOS 18.2 or later, the default will be “Categories” view. If you tap three horizontal points in the top right corner of your inbox you’ll see it’s set to categories.
  • If you don’t want to use categories, tap three horizontal points again and select List view.

Ensure that important emails reach Primary

To make sure you receive important emails, such as CyberGuy newsletterland in the “Primary” category:

  • Scroll through your inbox and find and tap any email from CyberGuy Newsletter.
  • If you don’t have one on hand, check yours “garbage” or “Promotions” folders.
  • Touch left arrow.
  • Click where it says “Categorize sender.”
  • Touch Primary.
  • Then tap Continue.

This simple action helps to signal its importance. After you manually move an email to the Primary category, Apple’s Mail app will learn from this action.
