Alarmed in Virginia: 5 reasons why concern is rising over Fairfax County schools

Last Friday, the horrifying news broke that a 19-year-old illegal immigrant student in the United States was criminally charged with nine counts of assault and battery for allegedly groping girls in the hallways Fairfax County, Virginia High School.

According to the mother of one of the alleged victimsthe accused “sneaked up behind [the girls] and put your hand between their legs. It wasn’t just a punch or a butt grab. It was touching the private area. It’s been going on for months.”

What’s even more shocking is that Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) told the parents of the alleged victims that the alleged attacker will be allowed to return to school once he is released.

This is just the latest embarrassment for The largest public school system in Virginia — a district that has led the way in implementing far-left policies aimed more at virtue signaling than educating children.

The results are predictable and terrifying: students are put in danger, teachers’ hands are tied, parents are out of the loop, and quality of education has been steadily declining in a district where academic achievement was once heralded.

Here are five examples of FCPS’s insanely misguided priorities:

1. Illegal immigrants above student safety

FCPS officials proudly boast of their “The politics of trust,” which cites the “climate of fear and stress that would affect all students” if ICE detains parents while children are in school. To that end, FCPS Superintendent Michelle Reid pledged to “do everything we can — to the fullest extent permitted by law —” to make FCPS a safe space for students and families who are in the country illegally. Law-abiding families are being ignored.

The result of this policy is clear: when the attacker charged groping is released, FCPS will welcome him back into their taxpayer-funded school system while continuing to expose every other student to uncertainty, if not danger.

FCPS said in a statement: “While Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) cannot comment on specifics due to federal and state privacy laws, our priority is student and staff safety and we fully investigate any time someone reports an incident or says they do not feel safe at school. We are grateful to our law enforcement partners, who continue to act quickly and thoroughly when there are safety concerns in our schools. The safety of all FCPS students and staff remains a top priority.”

2. Disciplinary policies based on race

FCPS handles student discipline through an “equity lens” designed to eliminate “disciplinary disproportionality” among students of different races. In simple terms, this means that if one racial group is disciplined at a rate higher than its share of the student population, FCPS will mitigate discipline for that group to bring the percentages into line, regardless of whether the discipline was justified.

This results-based approach to discipline is not only arguably illegal, it also makes schools visibly less safe. FCPS doesn’t seem concerned about either outcome.

3. Boys in girls’ locker rooms and bathrooms

FCPS mandates that students be allowed to use bathrooms and locker rooms appropriate to their own self-selected “gender identity”. A student who objects to sharing a bathroom or locker room with a person of the opposite sex is instructed to comply or use an alternative private space.

The consequences of this policy are already showing. Just last year, a boy with facial hair and described as wearing “pants so tight they clearly outlined his genitalia” began using the girls’ locker room at West Springfield High School, where he watched girls change into “various stages of undressing.”

FCPS investigated the case and concluded that everything was fine because the boy identified himself as a girl. In fact, FCPS is so committed to this policy — and so dismissive of its dangers — that it is refused to comply with a request from the US Department of Education to overturn it, risking millions of taxpayer dollars in federal funding in the process.

4. Keeping secrets from parents

FCPS established the system designed to withhold information from parents when a child tries to “socially transition” to another gender while at school — either by using a different name, different pronouns, or opposite-sex bathrooms and locker rooms. Under this system, FCPS educators are instructed to exclude information related to a student’s new “gender identity” from official records and to limit parents’ visibility into their children’s records, making them available only to district officials.

This scheme can circumvent the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, which gives parents access to children official school records. FCPS is likely familiar with this federal law.

This practice is a clear attempt to exclude parents from making decisions regarding the health, emotional upbringing and education of their children. It is also in conflict with recent decisions of the Supreme Court in Mahmoud v. Taylor and Mirabelli v. Bonta.

5. Possible sale of data to communist China

It should be apparent from the above policies that FCPS appears to prioritize illegal students in the country over American students and to give short shrift to the constitutional rights of parents. But FCPS’s “America Last” mindset takes things to a whole other level.

As reported National reviewthe watchdog group Parents Defending Education claims that FCPS has provided intellectual property on Chinese Communist Party. According to reports, a nonprofit affiliated with Thomas Jefferson High School — FCPS’s top-ranked STEM school — received millions of dollars from CCP-linked entities, including one known as the “TJ Fund,” in exchange for information representing a blueprint for China to replicate Thomas Jefferson High School and its educational success.

An FCPS spokesperson told National Review, “The TJ Fund is a separate and independent 501(c)(3) entity that is not overseen by FCPS.”

The list could go on, but the conclusion is clear: FCPS’ results make it an unviable choice for families who expect their children to be protected.

Parents should avoid this school system if they can, and if they can’t, they need to be extremely diligent in protecting their children from a district that has repeatedly shown they won’t.
