IBF heavyweight champion Jay Opetaia says Davis Niika is trying to end what he’s trying to achieve with his career, and he won’t let him do it on Wednesday night at the Gold Coast Convention Centre, Broadbeach, Australia.
A deflated-looking Opetaya (26-0, 20 KOs) seemed a little surprised by the intensity Niika (10-0, 9 KOs) displayed during their weigh-in showdown. He thinks that Niika, 29, plans things at home in advance, which is not his style.
The challenger is trying to get the upper hand to win the fight because he knows he is facing what many fans believe is the king of the cruiserweight division. Niika doesn’t have the experience or excitement of her career as Opetaya, but that doesn’t mean she can’t win.
He catches Jai at an ideal time, with him starting to show an effort to make weight and fighting a tough rematch with former IBF cruiserweight champion Mairis Briedis last May. Niika has the size, power, and hunger to win this fight if she can get the better of Opetaya.
“I didn’t expect that either. That was his little one. I know this kid goes home and plans things in his head what he was saying. who knows I don’t care,” said Jay Opetaia Boxing King Mediatalking about his weigh-in showdown with David Niika.
“I have never insulted anyone.” I never talked about anyone. I said I live here. This is what I do. I’m talking about myself. I never belittle anyone. He’s still a good guy, but very intense inside. We have a lot of pressure on ourselves.
“This is his chance and he’s trying to end what I’m trying to do.” So everything is on the line. I don’t know, man. It’s strange to hear that,” Opetaja said when some people told her that his aura “creeps their skin.”
Niika wanted to show that Opetaia was not afraid of him like the others, and so he went in his face, letting him know that he was coming to win this fight. He is projected to win by knockout, and it will be interesting to see if he can do that against Jai. If he does, it will disrupt Opetaya and his promoter, Eddie Hearn’s, plans to fight Gilbert ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez and Alexander Usyk.
“I’m just focused on myself, trying to win these fights and move forward in life.” I hope they give you goosebumps and force you to get down and do something,” Opetaja said.
“I met Mike Tyson.” I respect Mike Tyson too much to put myself through that, and he gives me goosebumps. So what does that say? So, I don’t know what to say,” Opetaja said.
