Trump threatens Denmark with economic retaliation on Greenland

US President-elect Donald Trump has threatened “extremely high” tariffs on Denmark if it resists his bid to annex Greenland, a self-governing part of Denmark.

Asked on Tuesday whether he would rule out using military or economic power to control the vital island, he said: “No, I can’t guarantee you either of those two.”

“I can say this, we need them to protect the economy,” he said.

Trump’s comments came as his son, Donald Trump Jr, visited Greenland the same day.

Before arriving in the capital of Nuuk, Trump Jr said he was going on a “private trip” to speak to people, and had no scheduled meetings with government officials.

When asked about Trump Jr’s visit to Greenland, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told Danish TV that “Greenland belongs to Greenlanders” and that only the local people can determine its future.

He admitted that “Greenland is not for sale”, but insisted that Denmark needs close cooperation with the US, a close NATO ally.

This is a growing issue. Some changes to follow.
