Jean-Marie Le Pen has died at the age of 96, according to the family’s statement to AFP.
Le Pen, who had been in foster care for several weeks, died on Tuesday afternoon “surrounded by her loved ones”, the family said.
Le Pen – a Holocaust denier and unrepentant on race, gender and immigration – founded the French Front Party in 1972.
He ran for president against Jacques Chirac in 2002.
Le Pen’s daughter, Marine, took over as head of the party in 2011. Since then she has transformed the party into the National Rally, turning it into one of the largest political parties in France.
