The California Highway Patrol took to social media to warn residents of the state about a new scam that is doing the rounds.
Phone scammers posing as Amber Alert “representatives” offer to meet at homes and collect personal information to “enroll” children, a procedure that is not actually practiced.
“The AMBER Alert system does NOT work like this!” the post read.

Amber Alert, part of a package of signed child safety laws by Congress in In 2003, it was named after 9-year-old Amber Hagerman of Arlington, Texas, who was kidnapped and murdered in 1996.
A national alert system was created to quickly notify the public about child abductions.

In their announcement, the CHP reiterated that they are the only authorized agency for activation Amber Alerts for the state.
The agency also advised the public to never give out personal information or answer calls from “possible scam” numbers, and to notify the police immediately if contacted by a scammer.
