The Ministry of Defense of Russia has said that Ukraine has launched new attacks in the Kursk region of Russia.
In his statement, the military said that attempts to destroy Ukrainian forces are continuing. Ukrainian officials have also said that work is underway.
Ukraine first began to intervene in Russia’s Kursk region in August last year, seizing a large chunk of territory.
In recent months, Russian forces have made significant gains in the region, pushing back the Ukrainians, but not completely dislodging them.
In a statement sent by Telegraph on Sunday, the Ministry of Defense of Russia said: “At around 9am Moscow time, in order to stop the attack of the Russian army in Kursk, the enemy launched an attack made by two groups. tanks, one armored vehicle , and 12 armored fighting vehicles.”
The head of the office of the president of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, said that “there is good news from the Kursk Region” and that Russia is “getting what it deserves”.
Ukrainian CEO Andriy Kovalenko said in a Telegram Sunday’s post: “The Russians in Kursk are experiencing great anxiety because they were attacked from several sides and it was a shock.”
It’s not clear if the frustration is big enough to make a big change in the front line.
Kyiv’s military is said to be suffering from a lack of manpower and has been out of control in eastern Ukraine in recent months, as Russian forces close in.
It comes as Ukraine’s military said Russia had launched another attack on Ukraine overnight.
It said it shot down 61 drones in Kyiv, Poltava, Sumy, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Cherkasy, Dnipropetrovsk, Zhytomyr, and Khmelnytskyy.
There were no direct hits, but several buildings were damaged in the Kharkiv region by the hijacked drone, the air force said.
In November, Ukraine reported that its forces had engaged in combat with North Korean forces in the Kursk region.
The appearance of North Korean troops was in response to a surprise attack across the border by Ukrainian troops in August, up to 18 miles (30km) into Russian territory.
Moscow has evacuated around 200,000 people from border areas and President Vladimir Putin has blamed Ukraine’s aggression as “the main trigger”.
Two days later, the Ukrainian military commander said that he controls an area of Russia of more than 1,200 sq km and 93 villages.
Some of those areas have been retaken by Russia but Ukraine still has troops in the Kursk area.
