Nick Clegg, president of global affairs at Meta, is leaving the social media platform and will be replaced by Joel Kaplan, a prominent Republican known for overseeing the company’s relationship with conservatives.
In a post on Thursday’s Mater Facebook, CleggA former leader of the Liberal Democrats and UK deputy prime minister said he was leaving the company after seven years. He added that he would “take a few months to hand over the reins” and represent Facebook at international gatherings before moving on to “new adventures.”
Kaplan previously served as deputy chief of staff at the White House during the George W. Bush administration and is known for managing the company’s relationship with Republicans.
In the past, Facebook has dismissed claims that some figures, including Kaplan, had political influence over its decision-making processes and dealings with politicians.
The shake-up comes weeks before Donald Trump — who has repeatedly accused him meta And other platforms on censorship and silencing conservative speech — are poised to return to the White House.
Some big tech executives who previously had a frosty relationship with the Republican leader have since taken action to court the president-elect. Since the US election, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has had dinner with Trump at his Florida estate in Mar-a-Lago and congratulated him on his victory. Semafor first reported about the change.
