Suspect carrying knife, Molotov cocktails charged with attempting to assassinate cabinet nominee

On Thursday, English was charged with attempted assassination of a candidate for a cabinet member and carrying a dangerous weapon based on the US Capitol building.

The English appeared in the initial court on Thursday afternoon.

Prosecutors said English also originally planned to kill the speaker of the Mike Johnson house, R-La, and Minister of Defense Pete Hegsetth, and was inspired by the suspect for the murder of United Healthcare, Luigi Mangione.

On January 27, English approached the US Capitol Officer and allegedly stated: “I would like to get involved,” according to initial allegations documents.

English claimed that he had two Molot cocktails and two knives and expressed that he was “killing Scott Beasent”, according to court documents. Federal prosecutors said English left the home in Massachusetts and traveled to Washington with the intention of killing Hegsetth, whom the suspect called “Nazi”, and Johnson, and burning the Heritage Foundation, a conservative research center near the White House.

Capitol police officers found a folding knife and two improvised flammable devices made of vodka bottle with a gray cloth attached to the top inside the English jacket during the search.
