Police are investigating the explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Police said a cybertruck stopped in front of the hotel on Wednesday near the glass door, then smoke started coming out of the truck and it exploded.
The driver was killed and seven people were injured, police said without naming any of the victims. Officials said all injuries were minor.
The fire broke out around 0840 PT (1540 GMT), just hours after ten people were killed when a man drove a truck into a crowd in New Orleans, Louisiana, on New Year’s Day.
Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Police Department said authorities are “very aware of what happened in New Orleans”, referring to the attack which included explosive devices found near the site in Louisiana.
“As you can imagine, with the explosion that happened on the iconic Las Vegas Boulevard, we are doing everything we have to do to protect our community,” he said at a news conference.
“Obviously, the cybertruck, the Trump Hotel, there are a lot of questions that we have to answer as we move forward,” he said.
McMahill said there is no longer a threat to the Las Vegas team.
Fire department officials said emergency crews worked quickly to put out the car fire.
They added that people should stay away from the area and that the hotel has been moved, with many guests moving to other places.
In a statement posted on X, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that “the entire Tesla executive team is currently investigating this matter. We will post more information as soon as we learn everything. We have never seen this before”.
The hotel is owned by President-elect Donald Trump’s company. In X’s letter, Trump’s son, Eric Trump, said “an electrical fire occurred at Trump’s Las Vegas porte cochère”.
“The safety and well-being of our guests and employees remains our top priority. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Las Vegas Fire Department and local police for their quick and competent response,” he said.
Footage of the incident circulating on television shows a cybertruck in front of Trump’s hotel entrance before the fire.
Stephen Ferlando told the Washington Post that he witnessed the incident from his hotel room on the 53rd floor of Trump Tower. He said the source of the “explosion” was that the windows started shaking.
The Trump Hotel has 64 rooms and approximately 1,300 suites, according to its website.
Trump recently named Musk to lead the advisory commission, the Department of Government Efficiency, after the two teamed up during Trump’s campaign.
