Composers Children Leonard Bernstein – Nina Bernstein Simmons, Alexander Bernstein and Jamie Bernstein – has done the case that their father’s music is performed at the Kennedy Center, despite the controversy over the takeover of music and the place of music and art.
“Since President Trump has stated control of the center, setting up himself the president and cleaning his committee and administration in favor of his loyalists, numerous artists (although not all) have interrupted ties with the institution in protest,” Bernstein’s surviving children in the guest essay New York Times. “Many friends and associates invited us, owners of our father’s music rights, to withdraw their works from the Gala Program on Saturday.”
Trump dismissed the Board of Directors of the theater in January and announced that chosen for the chair of the Committee by its new handmade board. After the President’s announcement, some groups opposed to Trump’s administration decided Cancel shows in the middle.

Responding to controversy, Bernstein’s children claimed that their father would want his music to be played on Kennedy Center.
“We wondered: What would our father do?” Bernstein’s children wrote. “We already knew the answer in our hearts. He will let his music be heard. But we believe we can make his strong statement, in honor of our father, letting people hear his music in the area, as a sounding of Mr. Trump’s ugly politics.
They continued: “These days, tired and stuck while many of us feel the relentless attacks of President Trump on Civic Rights and the Constitution itself, we can find comfort in our father’s music. His notes invite the courage to be alone, to express ourselves – and to be what the Americans were always intimidated: free.”
