Former Secretary of State John Kerry took defensive posture after hosting MSNBC pointed out that Russia annexed Crimea under his guard during Obama administration.
Chris Jansing from MSNBC spoke with Kerry from the Vatican on Friday ahead of Pope Francis funeral. Jansing mentioned that Pope Francis was “Voice for Peace” and was cautious about the current war between Russia and Ukraine.
“You were the Secretary of State when Russia annexed Crimea,” Jansing said. “And I want to ask you …”
“But when they stated they were,” Kerry interrupted. “We didn’t let them annex him. And we stopped and we got up against it.”

“Okay,” Jansing agreed. “They said it was theirs.”
“Yes, they said that, but according to international law, it doesn’t do theirs,” Kerry replied.
Jansing continued to ask Kerry what he thought President Donald TrumpThe proposal to maintain control of Crimea under the potential peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine.
“Well, who knows?” Kerry responded. “Personally, I don’t agree to put it on the table.”
Trump’s ‘Stop’ Message to Putin Echos Biden ‘No’ of 2022

Russian President Vladimir Putin annexed Crimea in 2014, when Kerry led the State Department under President Barack Obama. .
“It’s a dramatic change in American politics“Jansing said.
“Huge- I just said I couldn’t necessarily agree with that putting on the table,” Kerry continued. “Who knows what the parties will accept. Clearly, each side has to take it as a fair towards them and somehow as a balanced outcome. And I think they will publish it where you are coming down as a mediator before time put everything in a very difficult position.”
“I welcome the president for that. I know he is giving up for that. He wants to have peace. I believe in it, and I want to do well in their efforts to try to get there. It’s a difficult task, but it’s feasible. And I think it’s really important for the administration to continue working on it,” Kerry added.
