United States Coast Guard officials in California say six people are suspected of human smuggling at the Golden State’s southwest border last week.
The incidents involved more than 60 people and occurred between December 23 and 29, according to the USCG.
Statement published on X branch account he said many lives were lost during the incidents but did not provide further details.

“Tragically, this endeavor has claimed many lives. Taking to the ocean in unseaworthy vessels with unlicensed captains in cold, unforgiving waters is deadly,” the statement said.
On December 11, the USCG released a similar statement stating that 14 people were suspected of people smuggling events in which 73 people participated over seven days.

They mentioned possible complications with water temperature below 60 degrees, which can cause hypothermia in less than 30 minutes.
“Smuggling attempts put lives in extreme danger,” the USCG said.
