Lawyer for a Maryland school district And Neil Gorsuch’s Supreme Court justice has had a wild exchange about a children’s book this week in the midst of a case that was brought by parents who want to be able to decide their children from reading LGBTQ books of the story in their public school.
Gorsuch asked Alan Schoenfeld, a lawyer who represented the public schools of Montgomery County, about “Ponalo Pride!” A 32 -page book that tells the story of a family that celebrates the day of pride when their dog is lost on the parade and effort to reunite with their loved ones.
The Book of the Alphabet for Roma, which is described as “affirmative and including”, allows readers to notice objects that begin with each letter alphabet, and at the same time offer “a joyful view of a parade of pride and a vibrant community that celebrates this day every year.”
The book was previously used in the district Before kindergarten curriculum.

“And they are used in English instructions at the age of 3?” Gorsuch asked.

“It’s the one where you should look for skin and things – and slavery – such things,” Gorsuch replied.
“It’s not slavery. It’s a woman in the skin …”
“A sex worker?” Gorsuch asked.
“No. That’s not true.” Schoenfeld replied.

“God, I read … dear Queen?” said Gorsuch.
Schoenfeld said that the skin is actually a woman in a leather jacket and that “one of the words is a dear queen.”
The High Court listened to arguments in a case brought by religious parents who say that young children cannot be expected to separate the moral messages of teachers from their family’s belief.
Eric Baxter, a lawyer who represents parents in Maryland in Mahmoud v. TaVidnjakJustices said that the school district had violated the first amendment by denying the demands for giving up books that “opposed their religious beliefs”, even while allowing an exemption for other religious complaints-a book depicting the Muslim prophet Muhammad.

Baxter said that teachers were obliged to use materials in the class after the district approved certain books by a curriculum with LGBTQ theme 2022.
“When the books were first presented in August 2022, the Committee suggested that they be used five times before the end of the year,” he said. “One of the schools, Sherwood school, in June for the month of Pride, she said she would read one book every day.”
District initially allowed parents to exclude their children religious concerns But a reversed course until March 2023, citing concerns about absence and administrative loads.

Among other books, stories in the center of the case is “Prince & Knight”, a modern fairy tale that aims for children between the ages of 4 and 8, who tells the story of two men who fall in love after joining forces to defeat the dragon and later get married.
The second book, which is often cited during oral arguments, was the “Bobby Uncle wedding”, followed by a young girl who processes the decision of her favorite uncle to marry another man.

The Supreme Court is expected to release a verdict in that case by the end of June.
