Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin called out the media like your own paper for trying to appeal to “MAGE readers” after the election.
The opinion columnist joined anti-Trump critic George Conway at an event in the 92NY Center for Culture and the Arts on Dec. 15 to discuss the fallout from the 2024 election, in which President-elect Donald Trump won a second term.
After, as she claims, numerous examples of media capitulation to Trump since then, Rubin singled out her own publication because she wants to reach out to Trump voters.
“People ask me all the time why is the media so mummy-pamsey? And there are two explanations,” Rubin began. “The first is that they’re convinced that if they moved just a little bit to the right, all those MAGA readers — you’ll notice the contradiction in the terms ‘MAGA readers’ — would pick up The Washington Post , and they’d have more readers? Yeah, There’s nothing the Washington Post can do to subscribe to them, they’re in there somewhere.”

Although Rubin often criticized The Washington Post, especially its owner Jeff Bezos, for trying to become more politically neutral, she did not bother to resign in protest and even joked about a rebellion within the paper.
“I can be a rebel in my own house because the mainstream media has now, as we talked about, kind of capitulated, so I have to, like, thumb my nose,” Rubin joked.
She also called out claims that she is politically biased, saying: “I don’t think I’m biased at all. I’m just accurate. Dead accurate.”
After Bezos announced in November that the Washington Post would not be giving presidential confirmationRubin was one of many columnists who attacked Bezos for “bending the knee.”

“First of all, I don’t believe the reason given. I don’t believe that they suddenly decided – he suddenly decided that we should support everyone but the presidential candidates, and that of all the elections, this is the one to start this new policy,” Rubin said in to your podcast. “We endorsed a presidential candidate in 2020, no problem. I get that too, and even if it’s not intentional, it’s inevitably taken as bowing the knee to Donald Trump at the worst possible time when democracy is at stake.”
Rubin also criticized MSNBCwhere she works as a contributor, after it was reported that the hosts of “Morning Joe” met with Trump after the election.

“What were they thinking? Who do they think their audience was?” Rubin asked. “Well, maybe it wasn’t about their audience. Maybe they were trying to defend themselves or avoid the retribution they thought was coming. But really, these are rich, famous people. What do they have to worry about? it was just a terrible example how eager so many elites are to pander, to ingratiate themselves, to deflect attention, to deflect any criticism that might come from the White House.”
