Hundreds of skeletons Recently, they discovered archaeologists as they dug the British University’s estate – the discovery is a complete surprise.
The skeletons, together with the ancient church, were found on the estate at the school’s city campus, which the University procured in 2021. The University of Gloucestershire announced a discovery in a press release on April 11.
The assets of the city campus, where the department store, will be expected to open this year.
Dozens of ancient skeletons located in the heart of a busy city: ‘hard to imagine’
The University ordered the Archaeological Archaeological Archaeological Organization to dig up the location – and the medieval church was found in this area.
The destroyed structure was identified as the church of St. Aldat, which was demolished in the mid-1650s. It dated from the Middle Ages.

The excavators found “the foundations of limestone and brick, together with about 83 vaults of brick -coated funerals and within the church and in the associated cemetery,” the public said.
“About 150 post-medieval funerals, which are not contained in the vaults, were identified in the yard,” the statement continued.
“Deeper excavations have discovered approximately 170 earlier burials, most of which are considered to relate to the medieval church.”
In total, 317 skeletons and 83 brick vaults were discovered and carefully dug.
The discovery came as a complete shock for archeologists, which were not aware of the Church or its grave soil. The vaults were cleared in the 1950s to make a place for the area where the former Debenhams department store was built.

“The new parish church, on the site or near the site of a medieval precursor, was built in the mid -18th century,” said the Central Director of the Archeology of Cotswold Archeology Steve Sheldon.

“The latter survived until the early 1960s, when it was demolished to give way to the department store.”

“Although the trace of the medieval church was not identified during current archeological works, the identification of a limestone wall with the surviving tin mortar is most likely a part of the earlier church.”
