A former top adviser to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has given a bleak view of the world leader’s political future, days after the US president was elected Donald Trump he listed NHL legend Wayne Gretzky as a possible replacement.
The countdown began earlier this month during Trudeau’s days in office after Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned from his cabinet. On Friday, Trudeau’s former chief adviser Gerry Butts said it was “unlikely” that Trudeau would lead the Liberal Party in the next election.

Butts wrote ua Substack newsletter that Freeland’s resignation is a major blow to the party and could mean Trudeau’s political fate is sealed.
“If Mr. Trudeau’s resignation is inevitable, as is now widely expected, the only way forward is a real leadership race,” Butts wrote, via Canadian press.
“If you want to know who can play hockey, put on a hockey game. It doesn’t matter who you think you’re rooting for right now, we’ll all have a more experienced perspective if we see these people in action live.”
Butts served as Trudeau’s chief secretary when he won the election in 2015. His strong words came days after Trump teased Canada about its political turmoil, even hovering Gretzky as possible replacement for Trudeau.
“I just dropped off Wayne Gretzky, ‘The Big One’ as he’s called in hockey circles. I said, ‘Wayne, why don’t you run for Prime Minister of Canada, soon to be known as Governor of Canada – You’d win easily, you wouldn’t even have to campaign.’ , Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

“He wasn’t interested, but I think people in Canada should start a DRAFT WAYNE GRETZKY movement. It would be so much fun to watch!”
Since Freeland’s resignation, Trudeau has faced calls to resign. Trump also addressed Freeland’s departure.
“The The great country of Canada he’s stunned that the finance minister resigned or was removed from office by Governor Justin Trudeau,” Trump posted on his Truth Social, trolling Trudeau, after previously suggesting that Canada should become the 51st state of the US
“Her behavior was completely toxic and not at all conducive to making deals that are good for the very unfortunate citizens of Canada. She will not be missed!!!”
House of Commons Public Accounts Committee Chairman John Williamson said lawmakers will begin meeting on January 7 to consider a vote of no confidence in the Liberal government, Reuters reports. The vote would have to pass the House of Commons to defeat the government.
The Canadian Parliament will meet again on January 27, Reuters reports.

“It is now clear that the Liberal government does not have the confidence of parliament. The Conservatives, the Bloc Quebecois and members of the NDP — who represent the majority of MPs — have all announced they will vote no confidence in the Liberal government,” Williamson wrote in his letter.
