Take these shelf-staple foods home with you after your next vacation


In addition to the trinkets or souvenirs you might buy while traveling this holiday season, consider that non-perishable food items are a great way to capture memories of your travels and recreate the experiences you enjoyed.

Major food items such as spices, nuts, coffee and spice mixes they can be packed in hand luggage, while sauces, marinades and oils can be brought home in checked luggage.

Here are some unique foods you should grab the next time you’re away.

1. Fry the sauce

Part ketchup and part mayonnaise, the fry sauce adds a unique flavor.

It provides an alternative to the usual condiments you dip your fries in, Nadja Abada, a registered dietitian with JM Nutrition Edmonton in Alberta, Canada, told Fox News Digital.

“The brand of fry sauce, voted Utah’s favorite condiment, can be picked up when you’re on vacation and brought back home in a suitcase,” she said.

The beauty of the sauce lies in its versatility, she said.

“It’s not only used on fries, but also as a dip on tacos, in bowls and as a dressing in various salads,” Abada said.

2. Jerk seasoning

If you’re venturing to a warm place like Jamaica, consider buying some jerk seasoning at your resort’s gift shop.

“While jerk seasoning is probably widely available at home, it is best bought in Jamaica where it is made with local ingredients and ‘lots of love,'” Ababa said.

Sandals Dunn’s River, an all-inclusive beachfront resort with 12 restaurants, has an on-site store with a variety of products on the shelves.

When you get the jerk seasoning home, you can add it to the chicken and enjoy. If you don’t like chicken, you can use jerk seasoning in various marinades and sauces.

“You can even add it to the eggs to give your breakfast a Jamaican flavor and bring back some fond memories of your travels,” noted Ababa.

3. Salsa and beans

If you happen to be vacationing in Mexico, it would be remiss not to find some easy-to-pack staples, Ababa said.

“While your options may seem endless, I recommend a few must-haves: beans and salsa,” she said.

The selection of beans on the shelves of Mexican supermarkets is large, she pointed out.

“Simply choose: black, pinto, garbanzo, Peruvian, ferry – whatever you want,” Ababa said.

Similarly, an abundance of salsa varieties can be found in Mexico, including red, green, raw green, pico de gallo, taquera, habanero, and chipotle.

4. Olive oil

If your wanderlust takes you across the Atlantic to Europe, Ababa says you’re sure to enjoy a wide variety of delicious food from the region, some of which you can take home.

“No matter which country you visit, the chances are great locally produced olive oil it tastes better than at home,” she said.
