Second child with measles has died in Texas, officials say

The second child with measles in Texas died, although the exact cause of death is unknown at the moment, according to the Health and Human Services Department.

HHS secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., plans to attend the child’s funeral on Sunday, a spokesman for NBC News told.

A couple of children and an adult in Novi Mexico that is also believed died of measles were first reported deaths regarding the disease in the country in the decade.

Since January, 481 measles cases have been confirmed I’m Texasaccording to the Texas Department of State Health Service.

This includes six newborns and toddlers at the Lubbock Day Center, which has been positively tested in the last two weeks, according to NBC News. Two of these children among 56 people who were hospitalized with measles in the area since the disease began to spread in January.

About one to three of every 1000 children infected with measles dies from respiratory and neurological complications, show data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Approximately one of every 20 children with measles suffers from pneumoniawhich is the most common cause of the death of measles in young children.

The outbreak of measles began in Texas at the end of January, but since then it has spread to several other countries.

There were 628 measles cases in at least 21 countries and Washington, DC, so far this year, according to NBC News.
