Trump says he is a ‘believer’ in H-1B visas for skilled migrant workers as right spars on immigration: report

President-elect Trump seems to agree with Elon Musk in support of H-1B visas for skilled workers in the US, as a right wing against the ongoing immigration debate.

“I’ve always liked visas, I’ve always been in favor of visas. That’s why we have them,” Trump told the New York Post Saturday.

Trump said he recognizes the visas on his properties, saying, “I believed in H-1B. I’ve used it many times. It’s a great program.”

Trump’s comments come at a time of right-wing conflict over immigration and the place of foreign workers in the American labor market.

Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, chosen by Trump to lead his Department of Government Effectiveness (DOGE), argued earlier this week that American culture has not prioritized education enough and that foreign workers are therefore needed by tech companies like Musk’s SpaceX and Tesla.

Many tech companies have embraced the H-1B visa program, which allows U.S. companies to hire foreign workers in specific occupations, but critics of the program say H-1B holders are often chosen for jobs over U.S. citizens.

One such critic, Laura Loomer, caused a firestorm on X when she criticized Trump’s selection of Sriram Krishnan, an Indian American venture capitalist, as an AI policy adviser.

In the post, she said she was concerned that Krishnan, an American citizen, would have an influence on Trump Administration Immigration policies.

“It is alarming to see the number of career leftists now appointed to serve in the Trump administration when they share views that are in direct opposition to Trump’s America First agenda,” she wrote.

Musk doubled down on his position, reaching out to Xu on Friday to condemn a user who showed a video of him discussing SpaceX’s processes to follow the billionaire’s stance on the visa program.

“The reason I am in America along with so many critical people who have built SpaceX, Tesla and hundreds of other companies that have made America strong is H1B,” Musk wrote on X.

He then went on to quote 2008 action comedy, “Tropic Thunder”, which was a box office hit.

“Take a big step back and F— YOURSELF in the face,” Musk fumed.

Ramaswamy was similarly in favor of the H-1B visa, writing, “American culture has valued mediocrity over excellence.”
