MLB Rule 3.02 says: “The bat must be smooth, a round rod of more than 2.61 inches in the thickest part and the length of no more than 42 inches. The bat must be one piece of solid wood.” The rule also says that “experimental” bats cannot be used “until the manufacturer has secured the approval from the Major League baseball about its design and production methods.”
