“It was a little embarrassing,” Anderson said Fox 35 on Wednesday. “I think when we sit on daisy, there should really be no room for emotions, because when we become emotional over things, we do not always make the best decisions. We need to be strong and we must use the facts and truths and information to make our decisions, not emotions.”

“It’s a stormy day and a age. And this is a day I hate to be in this place,” Bonk said, and her voice pierced as she spoke about the risk of losing state and federal funds. “But my city is not for sale.”

“I can’t stand behind it as an immigrant, the only immigrant sitting in this council,” Giraldo said.

During the meeting, Anderson defended the memorandum, emphasizing that they would not give officials to the authority to go out in search of illegal immigrants “hitting the door”, but simply the ability to arrest and process illegal immigrants who were accused or convicted of a crime.

Florida Chief Lawyer James Uthmeier responded to a vote on Tuesday by a letter that required the City Council to change his position or risk civic or criminal punishment for the city of the shrine.

“The policies of the Florida Sanctuary are illegal. Your voice makes you refuge last night. Repair this problem or face the consequences,” Uthmeier wrote on Tuesday X, along with a copy of his letter.

Florida Ron Desantis Government responded to the vote and Tuesday in the X post.

“Thanks to the laws we have recently passed in Florida, local entities must participate in the federal implementation of immigration. The program 287 (g) is trapped by the local law implementation to help Ice. Florida will ensure that its laws are followed, and when it comes to immigration – the days of non -activity are over.

Uthmeier said in a local interview that penalties could include removal from duty, which Anderson said he should take care of the opponents of the Council Agreement.

“If I had been in the shoes of those who voted against it, I would be very concerned,” Anderson told Fox 35. “When it came to a public service, the governor showed in recent years that he was very serious about the oath.”

He added that even though he understood Uthmeier’s complaints, Fort Myers “is not a city of shrine” and takes public security very seriously despite this issue.

“I was very disappointed and also embarrassed to our city,” he said about voting.

But with the state and national attention to the Council, Anderson said he was “convinced” that he would get a different result after an emergency meeting was held on Friday to cross the memorandum again.

The meeting is expected to include an additional member of the Council, which was absent from the original meeting and could not vote.

However, he said that after spending years in public function, he learned, “You never know how the council will go.”
