Herald Square taxi driver was having medical episode during accident

The driver whose yellow cab hit six pedestrians when he jumped the curb in New York City shopping district on Christmas Day had a medical emergency at the time, police said.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) confirmed to Fox News Digital that a 58-year-old taxi driver threw the taxi over the curb, plowing the vehicle into a group of pedestrians in Herald Square at 6th Avenue and West 34th Street shortly after 4 p.m. pm ET on Christmas Day.

The NYPD did not want to elaborate on the species emergency medical assistancebut said the driver was taken to hospital after the incident and was in a stable condition.

Three others were also hospitalized, police said. Authorities said a 9-year-old boy was taken to a hospital with lacerations to his leg; A 41-year-old woman was taken to the hospital with a head injury; and the 49-year-old woman was transported to the hospital with a leg injury.

The other persons refused further medical treatment after the collisionthe police announced.

Herald Square is a a popular tourist destinationespecially during the holiday season, where Broadway, Sixth Avenue and 34th Street converge.
