On September 19, 1993, James attacked Toni, who was staying at her grandmother’s house before also killing a 58-year-old woman. James rented a room at Dick’s house.
According to court records, James strangled Tony before raping it and threw his body across the room. The girl sustained internal injuries and James took her to death.
James then went to Dick’s bedroom with the intention of raping her, but instead stabbed more than 20 times with two different knives.

The murders were witnessed by Toni’s older sister Wendi, who was eventually tied and locked in the bathroom. Toni’s two younger brothers slept in the house when crimes were committed.

“The questions present in this case require an appeal inspection that is not shortened to exigencies of direct execution,” wrote James lawyer, Dawn MacReady.
James’s execution would be another state this year, after James Dennis Ford was killed last month for killing a couple in Charlotte County in 1997. The second prisoner, Michael Tanzi, 48, should be executed on April 8 for the abduction and murder of a woman from Miami 2000.
