Syrian officials led by the new rebels said that 14 people from the Ministry of Interior were killed and 10 were wounded during the time when the army loyal to President Bashar al-Assad was removed from the west of the country.
They said the battle took place near the Mediterranean port of Tartous on Tuesday.
Security forces reportedly hesitated as they tried to arrest a former soldier for his role in the notorious Saydnaya prison, near the capital Damascus.
Just two weeks ago, the Assad regime was toppled by a terrorist group led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said three terrorists were also killed in the fighting.
SOHR added that security forces later brought reinforcements.
In another move, Syrian government officials imposed an overnight stay-at-home order in the central city of Homs, state media reported.
Reports say this followed the unrest after a video showing an attack on an Alawite shrine.
The Syrian Interior Ministry said it was an old video, from when terrorists attacked Aleppo in late November, and that the attacks were carried out by unknown groups.
The SOHR said one demonstrator was killed and five wounded in Homs.
Protests were also reported in areas including the cities of Tartous and Latakia, and Assad’s hometown of Qardaha.
Alawites are the minority group that the Assad family is from, and many of the former political and military leaders were.
The HTS-led lightning strike that started in northeastern Syria and spread across the country ended the Assad family’s more than 50-year rule.
Assad and his family were forced to flee to Russia.
HTS has pledged to protect the freedom and liberty of many religious and ethnic groups in Syria.
HTS has been designated as a terrorist organization by the UN, US, EU, UK and others.
On Tuesday, protests took place in the country at the burning of the Christmas treewhich is causing the authorities to protect the minorities.
