DAVID MARCUS: Confusion reigns as Canadians confront Trump’s tariffs

Calgary, Alberta – I didn’t even get off the plane in Calgary before two young men, returning home from a church mission, asked me what was happening with aggressive aggressive President Donald Trump, again, again, again, Tariffs on our neighbor north.

“I like Trump,” one of them told me, “but I don’t understand why he does it to the Canadians.”

What hit me was that he didn’t ask why Trump does this in Canada, or soon transformed Prime Minister Justin Trudeaubut to the Canadians.

After talking to them and more Canadians around Calgary on Saturday, I began to realize that even if Trump thinks that the tariffs are strictly business, the inhabitants of the Greater White North are obviously taking it personally.

The signs on their way to the city invited Canadians to boycott American goods. Above one store was a somewhat confusing sign on which he read: “Our orange cheetos do not impose tariffs,” even when the Canadian Liberal Party wrote the new premiere this week, the tariffs are at the top of all.

Calgary has an active and fun nightlife. On the pedestrians only for the 8th Ave SW, under the shadow of the famous tower, the restaurants abound, and the sound of hockey games Flames vs Canadiens spilled from the bars to the street.

Restaurant and pub James Joyce are a classic Irish joint. The sign says: “Since 1882” Not because he is at least so old, but because it is the year of the birth of a big novel, a subtle game about the words he would enjoy. Once inside, I found more anger.

Kelly is in his 60s and retirement. He likes the place because there is no TV, and when he realized that I was an American, I didn’t have to put the tariffs, he did, “Nothing Trump does does not seem rational,” he told me.

Kelly also said that the “trade war”, as he was called here, caused the re -establishment of nationalism in Canada, noticing the recent hockey games against America. “We have elbows now,” he said.

I asked if this situation had harmed conservative politicians, especially Pierre Poillievre, who would run for the premiere for the Conservative Party. He looked heaven, shook his head a little and said, “Oh yes, a lot. That’s a problem.”

Here in the conservative province of Albert, Kelly did not seem happy about it.

Later in the evening, I met David O’Brien, who moved to Calgary from Ireland ten years ago. “You have to understand,” he said in Lilting Brogue, “the cost of living here are out of control. That’s why so many people hate Trudeau, but that makes the tariff even scary.”

He said that Canada became incredibly politically divided from the late, but Tariffs and Trump teasing because it became 51. The state created a kind of national unity. “A few I know that conversation about joining America, but I think they know it’s not real, it’s more about the sad state of things in Canada,” he said.

For its part, Canadian newspaper media under the control of the state is all in the arrogance of Trump and its tariffs, and this is absolutely pervaded. Imagine a country where every MSNBC news channel is basically and pretty close to the situation in Canada.

One thing that is important to understand is that they are in the US or “down to the south”, as they call it here, the Canadian tariffs are on the back of the newspaper and the D block of news. After all, we have the Ukrainian war, Trump’s battle with bureaucracy and our economic concern for the fight against.

In Canada, these tariffs are the only story that penetrates the news cycle, and what Americans see as difficult trade negotiations, many Canadians see as an unexpected betrayal of a nation they have always held among their closest allies.

So far, from what I can say, confusion and frustration because of the tariff situation in Canada has not turned to anger, at least not to the American people. But the stress of the relationship is tangible and quite obvious.

Not only the next four years of Trump’s Presidency, but even for the next four months, they could basically change the relationship between our two countries, which share everything from trade, to languages, to sports leagues.

Whether this change in us and the Canadian relationship shows that they are positive, it remains to be seen, but the mood in Canada is not optimistic today.
