Three shot dead as gunmen attack Haiti’s biggest hospital

At least three people were killed when armed men in Haiti opened fire on medical workers, police and journalists during a rally to announce the reopening of the country’s largest public hospital.

Many more people were injured in Tuesday’s attack at the General Hospital in Port-au-Prince.

Pictures posted online show several people injured or dead inside the building.

The site was recaptured by the Haitian government in July, after it was seized and destroyed by the rebels who controlled a large part of the city.

Journalists were waiting for the arrival of the Minister of Health when the shooting started.

Reports say that two journalists and a police officer were shot dead.

In the video, Leslie Voltaire, the head of Haiti’s presidential transition agency, said: “We sympathize with all the families of the people affected by this accident, especially the Haitian police and all the media organizations.

“We assure them that this will not be without consequences.”

Haitians continue to suffer from unbearable sectarian violence, despite the establishment of a new revolutionary government in April and the deployment of international troops led by the Kenyan police six months ago.

Haiti has been plagued by terrorist violence since the assassination of then-president Jovenel Moïse in 2021.

About 85% of Port-au-Prince is still in the hands of the rebels.

The UN says that nearly 5,000 people have been killed in violence in Haiti this year, and that the country is now on the brink of collapse.
