American Airlines flights were grounded across the country Tuesday morning due to a technical problem, snarling travel during what carriers expect to be a record holiday demand period.
As of 7:55 a.m. ET, the ground cover had been lifted, however, an American Airlines spokeswoman told CNBC. The ground stop lasted about an hour.
“A technical issue is affecting American flights this morning,” a spokeswoman said. “Our teams are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible, and we apologize to our customers for the inconvenience.”
American said the problem stemmed from a platform provided by a third party.
“This issue has been resolved and flights have resumed,” the carrier said in a statement. “We sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience this morning.”
The Federal Aviation Administration said American had requested the ground stop
Airlines regularly request ground stops, which hold flights at the origin, so that the destination airports are not overwhelmed by flights without a place to park when there are interruptions. In addition to the technical problems, the land covers are put in place for storms and other severe weather.
Correction: The ground cover was issued on Tuesday. An earlier version got the timing wrong.
