Four attackers have been given short prison terms for violence against soccer fans visiting Amsterdam for the Europa League match between Ajax and Israeli team Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Sefa Ö, 32, was given the longest prison sentence of six months by the Amsterdam district court, while one man was given 10 weeks and the other two months. The fifth defendant was granted a community support order under the Netherlands juvenile law.
The judge said that the punishment for the four people is appropriate considering the seriousness of what they did and how they did it.
Riots broke out in several parts of the Dutch capital in early November and sparked international condemnation.
The five defendants sentenced on Tuesday were the first to be sentenced for the terrorist attacks that took place early on November 8, after events that lasted for two days.
The court said there was extensive video evidence showing Maccabi fans being subjected to horrific violence, and also showed footage of supporters tearing down Palestinian flags and chanting anti-Arab slogans. Taxis were also vandalized by fans.
The chairman of the court also said that there were riots in the Netherlands because of the war in Gaza.
Although the court took into account the “events” that had taken place, it said that “there is no reason to call for and use violence against those who support Israel”.

Karanveer S26, had already been convicted in 2022 and the court said that it did not prevent him from taking part in last month’s attacks.
The last of the five, Lucas D19, was found guilty of assaulting a police officer and participating in a Snapchat group that calls for violence against Maccabi Tel Aviv fans.
All five have two weeks to appeal.
The court said that at the time of his arrest he had an illegal and highly explosive “cobra” firework. Prosecutors called for Lucas D to be jailed.
Prosecutor René de Beukelaer previously rejected suggestions that the attack was a terrorist attack, as he said it was not the group’s intention to instill fear in its targets.
However, he said that there were anti-social activities that were exchanged on social media.
“I can understand that the Jews of Amsterdam were left in fear by these attacks, but it is different from saying that that was the intention of the suspects,” he told Amsterdam’s AT5 TV channel earlier this month.
