‘1923’ actress died for 3 minutes, suffered complete organ failure during weeks-long health battle

Actress Danielle Vasinova talks about her unique experience with death.

In December 2019, months before COVID was declared a pandemic, Vasinova contracted the virus. The actress, who will begin 2025 with roles in “1923” and “The Madison”, once again “Yellowstone” spin-offshe became so ill that she lay flat for three minutes.

In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, she explained that when she got sick, she felt like she had the flu, so she went to urgent care in Los Angeles, where doctors sent her home with a sore throat diagnosis and instructions to rest.

The next day, she said she woke up feeling “very weak” like she couldn’t walk. She had plans to travel to vegas for a commercial shoot, and was driven there by a family member from her home in LA. Vasinova felt bad during the entire drive, but only at 2 in the morning that night did she wake up her brother, with whom she was staying, to tell him, – I think I’m going to die.

He drove her to the hospital and left her out front while he went to park his car, and she said he has since told her that by the time he got to the hospital, “it was like a scene from a movie,” with all the people pouring into one room. When he got there, he saw a woman on top of Vasinova doing chest compressions, then saw a flat line on the heart monitor.

“Three minutes,” she said. “Disappeared.”

After the doctors and nurses managed to get her working again, she was transferred to another hospital, where she was immediately put into a coma.

“So, my organs have completely failed,” explained Vasinova. “They put me on a ventilator and I was there for almost a month. My mom was from New York. They couldn’t tell her that I would make it. They didn’t know if I would come back, if I would pull through, if this was the end of the road or not. But for me it was something more. It was not my time to go.”

She was admitted to the hospital on December 12, 2019, and then released on New Year’s Day.

During her stay, in addition to complete organ failure, she received a pericardial window – a type of surgery that is performed to drain fluid from the sac around the heart. She also had two tubes placed in her lungs to drain fluid and was put on a ventilator.

“I was 90 pounds,” she recalled of the layoff. “I had to learn to walk again.”

She continued, “I had to really take a step back and figure out … why it wasn’t my time, and what was my purpose, and what was I here to do? Because I didn’t even know how I was going to work again, I didn’t know my way forward. I didn’t know what to do .”

Vasinova grew up with horses and has always loved riding, so she said she turned to them for answers.

“I started going to the barn and I couldn’t ride because I was so weak. I couldn’t even go up the stairs. But I started going to the barn, and it was like healing, the healing power of the horses and just being around them and being in proximity to that energy and I just felt that … there was a greater purpose here.”

The actress said she was grateful to the medical team that helped her and the “love and prayers” that were sent to her during her ordeal, adding: “It was really connecting with God and just being grateful for every day here.”

Although she was technically dead for three minutes, she said she did not have a near-death experience. Or if he did, he doesn’t remember it now.

“I I don’t remember because they immediately induced a coma,” she explained. “Immediately. It’s like I went into a coma after I died and they said I can have flashbacks, I can have things that happen or that I remember later in life. But I don’t remember seeing the light. I don’t remember anything like that.”

What she remembers is feeling a “sense of peace” as she straightened.

“I can’t describe it other than like you have nothing to be afraid of. So weird because it was so traumatic, like it was so… I left. But there was just this sense of peace, the feeling of That’s all I remember.”

Five years later, Vasinova says she still hasn’t fully recovered.

While she’s “getting stronger every day,” her left lung still isn’t at full capacity, “so I just have to keep training and getting stronger and, you know, working out. And sometimes I get tired. And so I just have to, you know, recognize that and simply take a break, so the work is in progress.”

Yet her condition now is “night and day” from what it was in the middle of it all. She said she was “getting better every day.”

Her faith, she said, “100%” helped her through that.

“I think I lost touch with my faith a little before that,” she said. “And I think it really reconnected me and, you know, showed me what’s really important in life.”

In February, Vasinova will make her debut in “Yellowstone” universeappearing in the second season premiere of “1923.” Although she didn’t have any stories about Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, the stars of the show, she did have an interesting story about how she got the role.

“They dropped me at the last minute because I wasn’t really the first choice for the job,” she revealed. “But the other girl they got, I guess she couldn’t ride [horses]and so, you know, I’m driving and they ask me, ‘Can you be here tomorrow?'”

Her character, Ata Waipa, is a Native American from the Comanche Nation. Vasin herself is Cherokee and Sioux, and said that although she was cast at the last minute, she had to learn how to speak Comanche for the role. The storm delayed filming for a few weeks, giving her more time to prepare, but she said she had the dialect and language ready to go on short notice.

In “The Madison,” another upcoming series in the Taylor Sheridan universe, Vasinova will appear alongside Michelle Pfeiffer as a woman named Kestrel who lives on a ranch in Montana with her husband. She did not offer any additional details for fear of spoilers.
