Pope Francis, 88, was resting during a quiet ninth night at the Gemelli hospital after a respiratory crisis and blood transfusion, the Vatican said on Sunday.

The update came after the doctors said that Francis, which part of a lung was removed when he was younger, was in critical condition.

It is unclear if he was awake and ate breakfast.

The Pope suffered a long asthmatic respiratory crisis on Saturday while treated with double pneumonia and complex lung infections.

He received the “high” oxygen “of oxygen to help him breathe, and received blood transfusions after the tests discovered a low platelet number needed to clot, according to the Vatican.

Francis “is still awake and spent the day in armchairs, although in more pain than yesterday,” Vatican said.

Doctors said Francis’s prognosis was “reserved”. Doctors said his condition is touch and the beginning, given his old age, fragility and existing lung diseases.

The main threat is if the infection enters the bloodstream, a serious condition known as sepsis, doctors said.
