French President Emmanuel Macron was nervous during his trip to Mayotte where the storm hit.
After facing boos and calls for resignations from locals who wanted more aid in the devastated areas, Macron responded by telling locals: “I’m not a hurricane. I’m not responsible.”
They arrived in the French Indian Ocean on Thursday, five days after Typhoon Chido devastated the islands. Thousands of people are without water and rescuers continue to search for missing people.
Macron told reporters that he would extend his visit to Friday as a sign of respect, and that leaving on the same day “would have put an end to the idea that we come, look, leave”.
Macron will visit many areas on Friday. He also said that the government will send aid to the region soon, adding that France will hold a day of mourning on Monday.
At least 31 people are said to be French officials, but the death toll is expected to rise as thousands remain missing. Most of the islands are still without power.
Officials say food and water are the most important. Macron he said he brought four tons of food and healthy goods on his journey.
After visiting the area in a helicopter to see the destructionhe said that Thursday is a day he will never forget.
The president promised to rebuild the damaged islands and the damaged buildings.
People shouted “Macron to stand down”, “you are talking nonsense” and “water, water, water” as they visited the damaged area.
During his visit to Mamoudzou hospital, the AFP news agency reported that a woman told Macron: “No one feels safe here… people are fighting with water.”
“Your work has failed,” a man at the hospital told Macron, according to Reuters. “Help didn’t reach where I live.”
But others said they appreciated Macron’s arrival and urged him to stay longer.
This area, located in the north of Madagascar, is the poorest part of France. It has many economic and social problems, including large numbers of migrants from neighboring Comoros and poor housing and public services.
Migrants are believed to be among the worst affected by the storm.
A state of known natural disaster has been declared, allowing administrative obstacles to be overcome to solve the problem quickly and effectively.
It is open for one month, but can be extended by two months if needed.
Chido – the deadliest typhoon to hit the islands in 90 years – brought wind speeds of more than 225km/h (140mph) on Saturday, destroying areas where people lived in metal-roofed camps and leaving fields of dirt and debris.
Typhoon Mayotte hit the continent of Africa, killing at least 45 people in Mozambique and 13 in Malawi.
