Tyson Fury’s trainer, SugarHill Steward, has revealed that John Fury will not be in his corner on Saturday night DAZN PPV rematch against unified heavyweight champion Alexander Usyk at the Royal Arena in Riyadh.
DAZN reports that Papa John Fury will not be in Tyson’s corner during the fight. Some people believe there were too many voices in Fury’s corner during his bout against unified champion Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs) earlier this year on May 18, confusing with different voices barking instructions at the beleaguered ‘Gypsy King’.
Jon being in the corner isn’t why Fury lost that fight, but he’s clearly a a convenient scapegoat that the fans are to blame for why their hero was short. Fury fans need someone to blame for their Viking falling short against Usyk, because it would be too painful for them to admit that he just wasn’t good enough.
The way the fight went it wouldn’t have made a difference if John Fury wasn’t helping. Sugarhill Steward had NO answer for Fury to deal with Usyk’s superior skills, movement and athleticism.
Steward looked like he had completely lost his mind when things started to go badly for Gispie King in the eighth round. When Fury got a bloody beak in the eighth round, SugarHill couldn’t help him. Tyson was alone. His coach looked like he didn’t know what to do. John had the right idea. ‘Attack, attack and attack.’
From what I’ve seen, John was the only one who seemed to have a useful tip in the corner that night. If anything, Fury should have ditched his trainer SugarHill and the rest of his sidekicks and just kept his dad around for the rematch.
The things SugarHill had taught Fury since joining him in 2019, such as lean tactics and rough play, were useless against Usyk. He immediately neutralized that simple-minded approach, leaving Fury with something to fall back on.
