There was definitely a nationalist touch to Trump’s second inaugural address. He referred to America first.
However, it was a little sunnier so far than his 2017 inaugural. The opening words of his 2025 speech: “The golden age of America begins right now. From this day forward, our country will flourish … We will be the envy of every nation.”
He later added: “From this moment on, America’s decline is over.” He refers to the assassination attempt on him and calls his survival a matter of fate, in order to restore the country.
His last inaugural address was dark and drenched top to bottom in nationalism.
And, to be frank, the priorities of that 2017 speech were, ultimately, his priorities as president. Not all of which he realized.
In that speech, he burst out of the gate declaring a great national effort to rebuild the country. Remember: this was 2017. There was no recession. There was no COVID-19.
But he referred to rusted-out factories scattered like tombstones across the land; crime, drugs and poverty at home while U.S. funds were spent abroad. He called it “American carnage” — and he promised it would end.
He said the entire world would hear this new slogan: “From this moment on, it’s going to be America First.” He promised tougher trade and border policies, which he certainly implemented.
But he also promised a wave of new spending on roads and bridges. He never succeeded in passing an infrastructure bill, but his successor, Biden, did.
