An Indian court has sentenced a man to life in prison for the rape and murder of a senior doctor, a case that sparked outrage and protests across the country.
The judge rejected demands for the death penalty but said that Sanjoy Roy, a hospital volunteer who was present condemned at the end of the week, he spends the rest of his life in prison.
Roy has maintained his innocence and is expected to appeal the decision to the Supreme Court.
The victim’s family said they wanted him hanged, and were “shocked” by the verdict.
“We will continue our fight, and we will not let the investigation stop… No matter what, we will fight for justice,” the woman’s father told AFP.
Indian law prohibits disclosure of sexual abuse victims and their family members.
The doctor’s murder, which took place last year at a hospital in the city of Kolkata in the state of West Bengal where he worked, sent shockwaves across the country.

The case sparked protests and concerns about the safety of health workers in India, especially women.
According to a document issued by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), seen by the BBC, Roy went to the hospital drunk and found the female doctor sleeping alone.
The autopsy report stated that the woman had been strangled by the throat and had marks showing that she had struggled.
Roy was arrested a day after the crime and has been contesting the charges, .
In Kolkata, doctors went on strike for several weeks, demanding action against the accused and officials who they said were involved in delaying or obstructing the investigation.
