A fire has broken out at a California power plant that is home to one of the world’s largest battery storage facilities.
The fire started in a building that housed lithium-ion batteries Thursday afternoon, a Monterey County Sheriff’s Office official said.
The Moss Landing power plant, operated by Vistra Corp, was evacuated, as was the surrounding community. No injuries were reported.
Officials are not fighting the fire, a Monterey Sheriff’s spokesman said, and are instead leaving the building and batteries to burn following the advice of fire experts.
